Sandbox Galaxy
I am proud to announce the availability of the Sandbox Galaxy!
The Sandbox Galaxy is meant for brand new players that have visited SpaceCiv for the first time, just finished the Tutorial Galaxy, and are eager to start playing against real people. They do no longer have to wait until a regular galaxy starts (usually on Fridays during the Beta Stage), but can enter the Sandbox Galaxy right away and start playing.
The Sandbox Galaxy is a persistent game, that means it has no end. However, players and their empires are removed after 1000 turns of playing. The Sandbox Galaxy ticks every 15 minutes, so these 1000 turns equate to a little less than 2 weeks. By that time a regular galaxy will sure have started its ticks in the meantime.
The purpose of the Sandbox Galaxy is to reduce the inactivity level in unranked galaxies. I think there are two reasons for inactivity in unranked galaxies:
1) Players start playing, but after a while find out that this is not the right game for them.
2) Players sign up, but over the course of several days that they have to wait until the galaxy actually starts, they either forget about the game, or lose interest.
Both cases should be covered to a large degree with the existence of the Sandbox Galaxy.

RE: Sandbox Galaxy
How about opening that sandbox galaxy for everyone? Would be nice to have a place to try out things. Besides, for people like me (lots of work) it would be cool to be able to play for a weekend (about 200 turns).

Also, what happened to "Galaxy Beta 122" (galid=129) its no longer on the galaxy list, I have to manually type it into the URL to enter.
I am more concerned why G122 does not show up on you galaxy list. Can you check again and see if it is there now?

I'm not so much the ravaging type - mostly I am peaceful unless cornered
Nice, sandbox galaxy, not a bad way to check out the new features too.
Perhaps an unwarranted concern, but a 1000 turn empire sounds like it could gobble up the whole map; only if there were a sufficient number of new un-attackable empires showing up would this be averted (or if the whole thing turned into a perpetual side-galaxy with alliances and players coming back with new empires; actually it's kind of an interesting experiment if it works out that way...). I know it's just a sandbox galaxy, but all it would take it one ambitious player... Could end up being just fine if everyone takes it really casually. But if it becomes a problem perhaps setting a cap on the number of owned planets would allow people to have the full two weeks if they wanted and avoid an omni-empire (as opposed to just shortening the "expiry date").

Ya know, I could really see this sandbox becoming a permanent game type (maybe "Persistent Galaxy") where you try to get as high a score as possible within the 1000 turns.

Retire From Sandbox Galaxy
It is now possible to retire from a Sandbox Galaxy at any time. This is so that you can make space for other players that want to sign up to the Sandbox, once you decided to stop being active in that galaxy.
Removal actually takes place during the next tick, after you confirmed to retire. Once you are retired you can sign up and start building your empire from scratch again the very next turn.
