Indeed, it is here ! Nongolf and myself are proud to present the first edition of this, hopefully, annual event, in which small teams will participate in a knock-out competition in tiny Team Galaxies, and the last team standing can call themselves the CS Cup Champions for this year.
What and how?
- Teams of 4 people
- Tiny galaxies with normal corruption, slightly reduced colonization and research costs, and fairly juicy planets.
- Rounds will start friday nights, with 1-hour turns for the first 50 turns, after which (on sunday night thus) we move to 2-hour turns for the remainder of the round, as to allow as many people to compete as is possible.
- There is NO protection period whatsoever, no limits on biobombing etcetc., if it's possible to do, it's also allowed.
- The winning team moves on to the next round, until there is only one team left standing.
As you can see, the gloves are off, this is a knock-out competition, and it will be fast and furious.
Who can participate?
Simply put, everyone. We prefer that you make your own team of 4 and sign up as a team, but we also allow partial teams or even individuals to sign up. Still, full teams have preference over partial teams, and those will have preference over individuals. Partial teams will be completed with signed-up individuals, and afterwards individuals will be put together in teams, until we have enough teams to start the competition. For nown the aim is to start with 8 teams, unless we have too little or way more signups. THIS MEANS THAT IF YOU SIGN UP AS AN INDIVIDUAL WE CAN NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL ALSO BE PLAYING, though we will try our best to accomodate as many interested players as possible.
For this first edition, we will not have any special rules on how teams should be made, or disadvantages for 'superteams', if this turns out to be too much of a problem during this edition, we can still look into some way to level the playing field by next year's edition. Still, if you are reasonably new to Cosmic Supremacy, do not let this scare you away, even if you get overran, you might just learn a whole lot while at it. On that note, though certainly not mandatory in any way, we would very much appreciate if some of the powerplayers would sign up individually or make a team with less experienced players, certainly if they do not plan to make a full team anyway, this would make the competition a whole lot more attractive.
What can we win?
- All players on the winning team will get a special tag (instead of the normal 'builds destroyers without bathrooms', 'puts shields on colony ships' etc.) saying 'CS CUP 2011 Champion'
- Winners get bragging rights 'till next years edition
- Fame will be disabled for this competition, for obvious reasons.
To go short, it's all about the honor of having been in, and maybe even have won the cup
We will leave this thread open for remarks or discussion for 2 days, after which we will start the sign-up procedure, so start contacting people and making teams allready
Good luck and may the best team win !

It's not all that obvious to me. With teams of 4 and everyone allowed to participate, I think awarding fame is ok.
Its a personal opinion of course, but I think quite a few people will agree : under normal circumstances, everyone can participate in any new round, barring rank requirements (but everyone of same rank has at least the same chance to compete for fame points). In this competition, two teams of exactly the same strength might, in the very first round, be paired with a very weak team and a superteam, respectively. The team that got the easy team will progress to the next round, earning at least fame for one win and one loss (in next round), while the other team only gets fame for one loss. If the first team ALSO gets a quite easy team as opponents in the next round, they get even one more win, even though they were equally strong to the other team which got barely nothing. The only thing that is QUITE certain in this kind of knock-out competitions is that the team that wins will most likely be the best team, the second best team might actually have been knocked out by the best team in the very first round. Considering that everyone should have the same chances to make fame, for this kind of competition it seems that disabling fame would be the right thing to do. Also, these will be quite fast and furious rounds, and the teams in the finals will be making quite a heap of fame rather quickly, which would not be representative of their actual level of play. And as a last consideration, we want to avoid people teaming up in a superteam just to come make a heap of fame fast and easily.
I hope that answers the question ?

I really don't see the difference between a member playing 3 normal TGs, and a member going all the way to the finals in this cup. He plays 3 games, and get fame for that according to whether the team wins or loses.
Doesn't matter much to me either way. I was just piqued by those 'obvious' reasons.
as to when it starts : tomorrow we will open the sign-up procedure, and if by tuesday next week we have enough teams, we will open the galaxies so everyone can sign in, thursday we have team selections, friday start of rounds. If this timetable is too tight, we'll postpone with one week. So either 2/12 or 9/12 start of first rounds.
As to how teams are pitted against each other : i think the fairest way to work is that i make a random list of the teams, someone totally innocent (like huntress for example
) makes a random list of paired numbers, both hand those lists in with Nongolf, who then substitutes the numbers with corresponding teams, and presto : we know who will fight who

Great stuff, Confused and Nongolf!
I will be moderately around in case you need some help.

It is obvious to me that this competition is a fully legitimate CS event, and it is my opinion that Fame should be enabled. With the new TG fame awarding system, and with 3 rounds to grab a win, there will be 4 players who gather 150 Fame as maximum, which seems quite reasonable for winning three games.

You're playing, then?
Very tempting, I must confess...
To be honest, I know that participation would be moderate, and I am worried (and I mean really scared!
) about being overrun by very active players... So, I am doing my best to overcome this condition and have fun with you all.
