i tryed wine and VMWare about a year ago on ubuntu, didnt work cause of smtg with graphics...
i use linux for work but dont have the experience needed (and nerves) to try to find out what's missing/wrong, anyone else out there able to do it?
Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with sugar on top?!

Is it possible to play without the galaxy map? But we are still able to give colonise orders and other move to orders in recon map; or just detect threats in; or read in game messages; - that way maybe it's easier to play on other platforms, and maybe even play on a smartphone?

somewhat playable in VirtualBox 4.1
CosmicSupremacy running under VirtualBox 4.1 can be used for planet management and look what's going on.
VirtualBox 4.1.18 : somewhat playable but with issues
3D map partly working. Galaxy map radar can't be used and move near can't be controlled/used
With Mouse Integration on: not possible to zoom and rotate the galaxy map using the mouse
With Mouse Integration off: mouse cursor dissapears when over the Galaxy Map, but possible to rotate and zoom
I used host OS Linux, Ubuntu 12.04 running on my laptop
I used Guest OS Windows XP. I quickly tried Vista, with experimental Aero guest drivers it hanged, didn't try the basic 3D driver but probably same as XP
Wine 1.5.9 : not working at all
If running with built in code it fails, CS complains that no DirectX detected
If running only dxdiagn.dll as native code it starts up but hangs
If running Direct X with native code it starts up but graphics is all messed up
A native Linux port would be nice... :-( I'd be even willing to throw some money at it if it was required (how about maybe a kickstarter or sth for a Linux port?)

Getting it to run in Wine?
The problem with the Wine implementaion seems to be that they haven't implemented support for tripple buffering.
The following print out can be seen when running with Wine DirectX code (only native code from CosmicSupremacy.exe and dxdiagn.dll): fixme:d3d:swapchain_init The application requested more than one back buffer, this is not properly supported.
Please configure the application to use double buffering (1 back buffer) if possible.
If googling this you find many games that didn't work because of this, some of them have been possible to get running by configuring the game to only use double buffering.
One nice thing with Wine was that even browser integration worked out of the box! (i.e. clicking Enter Galaxy link in standard linux browser opened Wine and launched CosmicSupremacy.exe to load the Galaxy!)
Perhaps we have a skilled linux programmer here that can add support for tripple buffering in Wine DirectX implementation?
