The Ship Design Screen

The Ship Design Screen lists all current ship designs.

Here is a brief description of the information contained in each column, ordered from left to right:

Active Column

The boxes in this column start off “checked”. This indicates the ship-design is “active” and will be listed on the production menu. If this box is unchecked the ship design will no longer show up as a production option. Unchecking this box will not, however, remove any ships from an existing queue. Being able to remove obsolete ships as a production option can prevent things from becoming cluttered due to an excess of production options.

Units (Hitpoints) Column

This column displays the base units and total effective hitpoints of your ship designs. The effective hitpoints are the ship’s units increased by its shield strength. A ship with 100 units and a shield strength of 50% ends up having 150 hitpoints. This means that a ship requires 150 firepower to destroy this ship in a single turn.

Hitpoints are listed first and the base units (units before shields) are listed second in parentheses.

This column displays both the minimum and maximum crew capacity of your ship designs.

The first ship has a minimum crew capacity of 1 and a maximum of 2. The second ship has both a minimum and maximum crew capacity of 2.

Cloaked Column

This column displays whether this ship is cloaked or not. A cloaked ship has the advantage of reducing the effective scanner range against it by 60%. It does not reduce effective scanner range for other ships either in the same location or in the same fleet.

This scanner dampening may be further amplified by researching certain Doctrines.

In Use Column

This column displays how many ships of this particular ship design your empire has built and are currently in use.

In Production Column

This column shows how many of this ship design are currently in production. If a plus sign is displayed next to the number this indicates that the ship is in a queue but not currently in production, and/or mentioned in a governors/admirals rule set.

Additionally if you hover the mouse-pointer over it a tooltip will come up that shows which planets are currently producing the ship design or have it in their queue, which shared production queues have it listed, and/or which governors/admiral have it mentioned in their rule set.
