The News Screen

The News Screen contains all of your reports and any private messages received from other players or that you have sent to other players. Each entry is organized by what turn it occurred. Along the right side of the screen there are various filtering options.

Since this screen lists ALL of the messages and reports you ever received (ordered by turn number), this screen can become quite cluttered. So filtering out the information that is important to you is quite important. The window on the right offers various filter options.

Filtering

Basically there are two main filters, one for News and Reports resulting from in-game events, and one for Private Messages sent by other players (or by yourself). These two main filters offer various sub-filters. Let’s have a look at them.

News

  • Battle Reports: if ticked, displays all reports stemming from ship-to-ship or ship-to-planet battles.
    • Mine Only: you can choose to only display battle-reports in which you participated.
    • Allies Only: you can choose to only display battle-reports in which your allies participated.
  • Conquered/Lost Planets: if ticked, displays all reports stemming from ground battles (invading troops fighting against stationed military on the ground) and all other reports in which planets change ownership.
    • Mine Only: you can choose to only display ground battle-reports in which you participated.
    • Allies Only: you can choose to only display ground battle-reports in which your allies participated.
  • Bio-Bombed Planets: if ticked, displays all reports stemming from bio-bombing a planet.
    • Mine Only: you can choose to only display bio-bomb reports in which you participated.
    • Allies Only: you can choose to only display bio-bomb reports in which your allies participated.
  • Detected Scans: if ticked, displays all reports stemming from detected scanning events.
  • Financial Reports: if ticked, displays all reports stemming from financial events, such as when you lose facilities and ships due to under-funding.
  • System Messages: if ticked, displays all miscellaneous in-game reports and events.

Private Messages

  • Inbox: if ticked, displays all private messages of other players sent to you.
  • Sent Items: if ticked, displays all private messages sent by you.
  • Notes: if ticked, displays all private notes that you created. You can create a new note by clicking the “New Note” icon right of the “Notes” label.

In addition there is the possibility to filter all these messages and news by the turn they occurred.

Show Messages

  • Last 100 turns only: allows you to display messages that occurred during the last number of turns only.
  • Between turn 0 and 50: allows you to only display messages that happened during a specific turn range.
  • Important Only: since you can mark individual messages and reports as important, you can choose to display important messages only.

Interacting with the Reports

Many of these reports hide more information than is visible at first glance. For instance you can mouse over the numbers and values in Battle Reports, which will pop up a tooltip with even more detailed information. Or you can mouse over the name of the location where this even happened, and a single click will center the camera in the Galaxy Map over the location of the event.

This actually works for most of the news messages: double click with the middle mouse-button (or ALT-double-click) to center the camera in the Galaxy Map over the location referred to in the news message.

Note that some Battle-Reports are too long to be displayed entirely in the News Screen. These messages end with “...”, click on them to see the full report.

All of the news and messages can be right-clicked, which will pop up its context menu. The following options are available:

  • Center Camera on Battle Location: available for (ground) battle-reports only.
  • Mark as Important: you can filter by messages that are marked as important.
  • Un-Mark as Important: this will clear the important flag.
  • Delete Item: you can delete one or more news entries with this menu entry. Shortcut: DEL key.
  • Reply to Sender: available for private messages only. This will popup the “Send Message” window right there, with all the original recipients selected by default. Shortcut: double-click.
  • Edit Note: only available for private notes: This will popup the “Edit Note” window right there, which allows you to modify that note. Shortcut: double-click.
