The Ship Design Screen

The Ship Design Screen lists all current ship designs.

Here is a brief description of the information contained in each column, ordered from left to right:

Active Column

The boxes in this column start off “checked”. This indicates the ship-design is “active” and will be listed on the production menu. If this box is unchecked the ship design will no longer show up as a production option. Unchecking this box will not, however, remove any ships from an existing queue. Being able to remove obsolete ships as a production option can prevent things from becoming cluttered due to an excess of production options.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Is Active: allows you to show/hide inactive ship-designs.

Name Column

This column displays the names of your ship designs. This is also the default column for sorting.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Name contains specific text: Let’s say all of your colony ship designs hold a specific code such as “Col”. If you filter for that string of characters only those ships will be shown (along with any other ship designs that happen to have “Col” anywhere in their name)

Class Column

This column displays the class of your ship designs be it shuttle, corvette, frigate, destroyer, cruiser, or battleship.

Possible sort criteria

  • Sort by Class-Name: Basically sorts all entries alphabetically. This is the default criteria.
  • Sort by Class-Type: Sorts by class type, ascending from the smallest class type to the largest.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Ship-Class: Allows you to show/hide specific ship-classes. For instance it is possible to only show Cruisers and Battleships, and hide all other classes.

Speed Column

This column displays the speed of your ship designs.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Speed higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs above a specific ship-speed.

Firepower Column

This column displays the light/heavy/bombing firepower of your ship designs.

Possible sort criteria

  • Sort by Light-Firepower: Sorts ship-designs by the light-firepower component only.
  • Sort by Heavy-Firepower: Sorts ship-designs by the heavy-firepower component only.
  • Sort by Bombing-Firepower: Sorts ship-designs by the bombing-firepower component only.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Light-Firepower higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a light-firepower above a specific number.
  • Filter by Heavy-Firepower higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a heavy-firepower above a specific number.
  • Filter by Bombing-Firepower higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a bombing-firepower above a specific number.

Shields Column

This column displays the total percentage of shields the ship designs have.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Shields higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with shields above a specific number.

Units (Hitpoints) Column

This column displays the base units and total effective hitpoints of your ship designs. The effective hitpoints are the ship’s units increased by its shield strength. A ship with 100 units and a shield strength of 50% ends up having 150 hitpoints. This means that a ship requires 150 firepower to destroy this ship in a single turn.

Hitpoints are listed first and the base units (units before shields) are listed second in parentheses.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Units higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with ship-units above a specific number.

Scan Range Column

This column displays the scanner range of your ship designs.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Scan Range higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a scan-range above a specific number.

Module Column

This column displays the modules (if any) on your ship designs. If you hover the mouse pointer over the module it will give you information about the purpose of the module and any special conditions that may apply.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Modules: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs equipped with specific modules. For instance it is possible to only show ship designs that are equipped with either a Colony Module or a Extra Pilot Cabin.

Build-Cost Column

This column displays the build-cost of your ship designs.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Build-Cost higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a build-cost above a specific number.

Upkeep-Cost Column

This column displays the upkeep-cost of your ship designs.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Upkeep-Cost higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a build-cost above a specific number.

Resource Cost Column

This column displays the required ship-resources to build this ship. Make sure you make this column wide enough since some ship-resources might be hidden on the right, due to formatting.

Crew Capacity Column

This column displays both the minimum and maximum crew capacity of your ship designs.

The first ship has a minimum crew capacity of 1 and a maximum of 2. The second ship has both a minimum and maximum crew capacity of 2.

Possible sort criteria

  • Sort by Minimum Crew Count: Sorts ship-designs by the number of minimum crew count required to fly that ship.
  • Sort by Maximum Crew Count: Sorts ship-designs by the maximum possible number of crew that fit on that ship.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Minimum crew-count higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a minimum required crew-count above a specific number.
  • Filter by Maximum crew-count higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs with a maximum possible crew-count above a specific number.

Cloaked Column

This column displays whether this ship is cloaked or not. A cloaked ship has the advantage of reducing the effective scanner range against it by 60%. It does not reduce effective scanner range for other ships either in the same location or in the same fleet.

This scanner dampening may be further amplified by researching certain Doctrines.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by Is Cloaked: allows you to show/hide cloaked ship-designs.

In Use Column

This column displays how many ships of this particular ship design your empire has built and are currently in use.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by In-Use count higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs that have a least a specific number of ships in service.

In Production Column

This column shows how many of this ship design are currently in production. If a plus sign is displayed next to the number this indicates that the ship is in a queue but not currently in production, and/or mentioned in a governors/admirals rule set.

Additionally if you hover the mouse-pointer over it a tooltip will come up that shows which planets are currently producing the ship design or have it in their queue, which shared production queues have it listed, and/or which governors/admiral have it mentioned in their rule set.

Possible filter options

  • Filter by In-Production count higher than specific number: Allows you to show/hide ship-designs that have a least a specific number of ships in production.
